Last week kicked off with internet littered with reports of singer Daddy Andre separating with his fiance Nina Roz.
The reports, carried by both mainstream and social media dominated the largest part of the week.
However, it would emerge this was all false. It was a stunt that the couple had applied to promote Nina Roz’s new song, “Enyonta”. It is not surprising that having getting all the attention they needed, the couple announced the premier of the song. They further re-followed each on social media where they had both unfollowed each other to further cement cement the separation reports.
It is at this stage that Ugandans came to learn they had been taken for a ride as the “separation” was all nothing but a stunt.
Well, this was not the first time that the producer-turned singer was using a stunt to promote his music.
Last year, he also applied the same gimmick to promote his collabo with Angella Katatumba. The pair successfully fooled Ugandans they were in a relationship. They even went ahead to release a collabo “Tonelabira” which failed to pick. However after doing what he is best at, the song started getting airplay all of a sudden. The stunt this time was that Angella had separated with Daddy Andre after he refused to take an HIV test. The public fell for it and it worked for the pair as “Tonelabira” ended up into a hit. Sorry Daddy Andre. Everyday is not a Sunday!
Meanwhile, Daddy Andre might have been caught in the act but he is not the only Ugandan singer to have used a stunt to promote his music or concert. Below we look at a list of artists who’ve used stunts before.
Kats & Fille
Kats organised a concert for Fille on November 25th, 2016. Being her first concert, the concert got a lot of hype especially across social media. However, with only a month left to the a month to the concert, the couple still hadn’t gotten sponsors and the finances to hold it on their own. Time was running out on them. It is at this stage that the couple look at ways of safely cancelling the concert. This is when the games began. Kats posted photos of him in soiled cloths with a story that Fille had beaten him up. This would trend on media for several days.
What followed was their alleged separation and the next thing we knew was Fille called off the concert. Ironically the couple still lived and worked together!
Straka Mwezi and Sizzaman
Celebrated TV personality, Straka Mwezi and singer Sizzaman severally told the public they were in a relationship. Quite a reasonable number of Ugandans fell for it. It wasn’t long before the couple announced a date for their wedding day.
But unlike all other weddings that are either taken to church or mosque, their was to be held in a stadium in a concert-like-wedding. And that was not the only odd thing about it. Guests were charged Shs10,000 each to be able to attend while VIPs were to pay Shs20,000.
Kids were not charged and these turned up in large numbers. By 11pm, there was just about 200 adults in the over 45,000 sitter Stadium. Once, this landed in the ears of the bride and groom, none showed up for what was supposedly their wedding!
Jose Chameleone and Daniella
In 2014, Jose Chameleone held a concert at Lugogo Cricket Oval where one of the artistes who performed was Nigerian musician, Davido. The concert was a mega flop.
Since then, Chameleone gave up on concerts for sometime but after three years of silence, Chameleone, who hadn’t had a hit in several years returned with a concert in 2017 that he dubbed ‘Legend Hit after Hit’. Once bitten twice shy. Chameleone was not willing to take any chances.
With just a month to the concert, he came up with a stunt. His wife, Daniella filed for divorce on allegations of battery and many other thing. The story captured the attention of both mainstream and social media for weeks. Chameleones concert was a success and that even marked the death of their divorce application as its hearing never kicked off and we’ve never heard of it again.
This wasn’t the first time Chameleone was pulling off such a stunt. Previously, he had used such a stunt to promote his album launch. In 2011, Chameleone surprised everyone when he showed up at Kibuli mosque where he ‘converted’ to Islam, dropping his name of Joseph and replacing it with Gaddafi. His ‘conversion’ would dominate news for months as a lot of things came up along the way to keep him in the news. From his father disowning him over the conversion to his furious in-laws asking their daughter, Daniella to divorce him.
Bebe Cool and Zuena
In 2009 when Uganda’s music industry became very competitive, making a hit became one of the hardest things. But not to Bebe Cool. He came up with an easier way of going around all of the hurdles of the time. His trick was to ‘separate’ with his wife, Zuena. In reaction to their ‘separation’, Bebe Cool released a full music album! Agenze, Bamugambe, Kasepiki, Nasalawo and many other songs. All were a huge success. In fact they are some of Bebe Cool’s biggest hits. Ironically, Zuena appeared in some of their videos – like – Kasepiki. Bebe Cool’s is without the most successful stunt of all time
